All my favorite characters
Jan. 6th, 2005 01:00 amOkay despite the title of the subject entry I seriously doubt that I have the ability to REALLY create a list of ALL my favorite characters... such a list would be infinitely long and aside from which, I think at some point, egotistical though it may be, I would have to start adding my own characters because honestly I love them too.
No, no, this list is of the characters I can think of that I've literally fallen in love with... Or as much as a human can with a fictional character which as it turns out is a LOT. And the purpose of this is to see if I can at all define the levels of which I adore each said character.
My newest addition to this ridiculously long list is Ryouga from Ranma 1/2. Mmmmm what is there to say about Ryoga? Well firstly, when touched by cold water he turns into an adorable little black piglet and can only be turned back by hot water (just as Ranma turns into a girl.) And so Akane ends up adopting him, naming him P-Chan and sleeps with him in her bed (hehehehe gotta love anime!) I personally find this absolutely adorable because besides being this super strong fighter (he has a constant habit of absent-mindedly tunneling through rock with his fists when he gets nervous) and so having this really cute angry piglet look, it's also a lot like sleeping with stuffed animals (and apparently other Ryoga fans have discovered the same thing.) He also has an absolutely horrible sense of direction. He gets lost CONSTANTLY (even more than my Mom) to the point where he'll spend days, traveling all across the country just to get to a place a block or two or way. And since I have an intuit sense of direction, remember where I've been when I'm going somewhere so that I can get back out again and can read a road map very well -- I navigate for my Mom constantly, I think this would be an excellent match. Aside from which, who wouldn't love a super-strong man that can also turn into a small, fluffy, adorable animal? Mind you, this might just be my animal obsession talking though ;)
So now that we have Ryoga to add, I started thinking where on the list does he go? And that was when I realized that the list has gotten so long now that I don't even REMEMBER all the guys 100% of the time. Luckily, an advantage to fictional characters is that they don't mind if you forget them ;)
So let's see. . . Now an absolute certainty is Silk from the Belgariad. While he's never officially earned the title of my #1 love, he's been my favorite character ever written since at least 5th grade and I believe I have written enough about my pure adoration for him that not much more needs to be said? If not, the short of it is Prince of Spies, King of Thieves and damn sexy. (Despite the "ferretty look" I kind of like the idea of his long twitchy nose... yes I have issues.) Now under the whole spy/thief/scoundrel type we have an entire category of which Silk heads. So next we have James Bond (the 2nd ultimate spy -- after Silk imho) and Lupin III (the second-best theif, after Silk of course.) Then there's Oliver DeBurrows of the Crimson Shadow trilogy but if I had to put him on a level with many of my other obsessions, I'm afraid he just can't compete well enough but he DOES earn a place on my list. After that we get into the slightly wider range of general scoundrely-type guys with Han Solo :D, and the very funny and always surprisingly Jarlaxle (from the R.A. Salvatore Drizzt books.) Again my crush for Jarlaxle, while still above many others (thus actually making it to my list) still can't compete on the Silk/James Bond level of things. And because this seems like the best place for him I'm also going to list Sirius Black. I've actually died out a little on Black since the 5th book.... I think I was really traumatized by the whole ... him .... dying ... thing .... *falls into denial once more* Plus I became a bit more obsessed with the twins as time wore on (as I'm sure is apparent.) Also, Robin Hood has to go on this list; it's an absolute must. It's hard to place him though due to the different versions and well... merely his different aspects -- somethings about him would place him much higher above but others would put him lower... (such as the whole bow thing, due to the sheer propensity to have female characters as archers in stories and have the more many guys weilding enormous swords or more original and unusual weapons, I really do have a hard time not seeing archery in epic stories as more of tomboy girl thing to do. This also is why I would never fall for Legolas. Much too girly.)
Now we begin to transition into guys who just flat-out make me laugh. (I'm a HUGE sucker for that in fictional characters.) Silk also stands out rather highly in this category but here he has some tougher competitors, firstly off the top of my head being of COURSE, Fred Weasley. While Fred and George are a team and without George, Fred's humor would probably be much MUCH darker (turning his little brother's teddy bear into a spider thus traumatizing him for life, giving same brother an acid pop to burn a whole through his tongue, taking still said brother's pet and using it for bludger practice... Oh yes, Fred is highly tempermental with a mean streak a mile wide.) I still pick Fred over George because he IS so explosively reactive and generally the prankster leader. (aka, the brains behind the operation.) Next up I think I'll list Miroku from Inuyasha. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why I like Miroku so much and really the only answer I seem to really come up with is that he's funny. Don't get me wrong, he's a good guy too, with the whole self-less noble thing and bravely facing his doom of a wind-tunnel and actually using it to his advantage (so I probably also empathize with the whole bleak illness thing) He does have a bit of the theif scoundrel thing too actually now that I think of it.... he has been known to well steal... and lol he also convinces people that there are dark spirits shadowing over their houses that only he can dispel -- which he'll gladly do for a night of rest and food ;) Quite the scoundrely behavior and as I'm sure I've mentioned, I'm a sucker for the scroundrels. I'm also adding Puss in Boots here as he is much more funny than anything else and the whole being a cat thing DOES somewhat change my affections for him but I figure, it's all unreality anyways :P Also he gets extra points for totally awesome accent (Fred has points for that too but Puss in Boots gets even more)
I have also debated quite a bit as to whether Mat Cauthon from the Wheel of Time should go up here but really, I'm just not sure. I'm quite fond of him and he and Perrin were def. my favorite characters in the series BUT, my attraction/obsession with him nowhere NEAR reached the level of many of the above characters and for that matter, I'm even much more likely to fall Oliver (even though he's a halfling and I'm not usually so big on them.) So I think he will earn an honorable mention but NOT make it to the list. And you know what? Same for Jack Sparrow (completely hilarious but not quite up to par with say, Han Solo) -- BUT it should be very closely noted that given the upcoming sequel in the future this could be VERY likely to change. We'll see...
Now you may have noticed that most (if not all) of the scroundely characters are also quite funny as well as being adventuring type characters. These are the adventuring characters that aren't QUITE as funny or are in general more serious and darker. Actually; James Bond should be down on this list but I tend to think of him and Lupin III each making up half of Silk so... yeah. Firstly I'm going to list Indiana Jones. He doesn't top this list but he's the best example of what I mean: completely sexy in that raw adventurous kind of way ;) This is also the list where I put Batman who ranks high marks. The hard thing about putting batman on a level is that he'd probably make it higher if he was funnier but at the same time then he wouldn't at all be Batman. What would Batman be without the dark mysterious surroundings and generally bleak, vengeful outlook on things? It's a good part of his appeal (along with, rich, athletic, determined, and completely BRILLIANT -- also a nightowl) I'm also putting down Jigen from Lupin III here because while still VERY funny, he's SO much more serious than Lupin (though, really that's not hard to do at all) and it's his darker, more mercenary attitude in comparison to Lupin's that makes him so attractive (and just to share; live version I'm telling you, he should SO be played by Johnny Depp.) Next, Wolf from 10th Kingdom obviously has to be listed at some point. I couldn't decide if he was scoundrely enough to go there, funny enough to go there (he's funny but not MAINLY funny) or if I should just save him for a miscellaneous section but as he's an adventure/fantasy based character I place him here. Good old Wolfie. ARRROOOOO!!!! :D Now a character that fits in PEFECTLY to this section (and not better elsewhere) is Drizzt Do'Urden. I mention those books constantly (by R.A. Salvatore) but I don't recall saying a lot about Drizzt himself (except to Leanne who I babbled incessantly to until she wanted to strangle me in my sleep.) I'm not really going to though. He's just amazingly well written and it's whole, rangery, life is one big fun battle outlook that I love most. He earns high marks but wouldn't make my top 5... :(
And the KING of the slightly more serious, adventuring, sexy guys is Zorro. THE Zorro. And by this I mean the original classic idea of Zorro. He is more perfectly played in the 50s version but this is because it's back when they were making him family friendly and thus more conservative. No matter how many times I try to tell people how he's perfect I still can't get enough of it. ;) He's got the accent going for him, he fences, he sings, he writes music, he plays guitar, he dances, he's cultured, he's highly moral and yet he STILL gets the fun out of a good prank :D he likes animals, he likes horse-back riding, and he will follow what he believes in to almost insane degrees :D Zorro is, without a doubt, the perfect adventuring type hero. And as much as I love Silk to pieces, if Silk was real, I'd probably stay FAR away from him but if I ever meet a real version of Zorro, I'll want to marry him right away. Oh and did I mention that whole old classic Catholic virtues thing? ;) *daydreamily contemplates Zorro*
And now we're up to my miscellaneous section. First off I'm going to stick Kouga of Inuyasha here. Miroku's still my fav. IY character but there is definitely something about unfailing devotion, pure strength and well wolfish behavior ;) that sparks my interest and so on goes Kouga (leader of the wolf-pack tribe btw.) Also on that note, Sesshoumaru (Inuyasha's full-demon, half-brother)belongs here as well. My attraction to him is even more obscure than Kouga's and really... it's WAY too hard to explain. Next I'm almost embarassed to do this BUT Adrian Monk. Yes, he's loopy... Yes, I'd go insane trying to be with him... but pure brilliance, and extreme devotion, both to his late wife and justice, it's just well... attractive. *blush* Also I've seen a lot dectective shows, and read a lot of mysteries but the only other detective I'm actually sticking on here is Jimmy Kudo of Case Closed (Adult Swim anime.) -- A random sidenote; my sister actually finds Colombo (even old, white-haired and super wrinkly) to be extremely hot.... that very thought scares the hell out of me. *shudders* I also have to add Charlie Weasley from Harry Potter. He actually beats out George and is only just under Fred on my HP thing. I'm really into that whole dragon thing and he is the first (and so far ONLY) animalogist who is really really attractive (Hagrid, while fun to read, just doesn't inspire that kind of thing haha) and he's got that whole Weasley red hair and freckles thing, as well as being strong from playing Quidditch and handling dragons :D And finally we have at long last, Ryouga.
So to put things in order. Zorro if in real-life would win out a bazillion times to everybody else, hands-down but because these are all fictional characters he still has to compete with Silk who might even beat him out. There's James Bond, Batman, Fred Weasley, Miroku and then perhaps Ryouga? Hmmmm Honestly, I don't think I can say for sure and I think Fred beats out Batman and James Bond. And now I'm sleepy and very very dreamy so now I'm off to bed to watch the snow fall and dream of.... lol well SOMEBODY ;)
Yay for fictional characters. Also, something I wanted to leave you with the lyrics to a VERY fun song though it probably isn't quite as much fun without knowing Ranma 1/2. Ryoga sings it as he travels completely lost as always, through Japan while writing a letter to Akane and the irony of course is that by the end of it he's right in her backyard without realizing it and still thinking that he's across the country. I love Ryouga hehe :)
Dear Akane-san,
How are you?
I tried to send you an early summer greeting card,
But I could not find a mailbox . . .
So I'm sending you a late summer greeting card.
I have been on a long journey in an unknown district.
I got you a souvenir at a beach. Star sand.
And although it's September, here in the northeast it is
Still very hot, like summer is still going on.
(Akane: "Ryouga, are you in Okinawa?")
Oh, I want to see you! Oh, Akane-san!
But I'm so shy. And, as if they were laughing at me,
The crow in the sky is cawing
And the duck on the lake is quacking.
(Mousse: "Quack!")
Spring seems so endlessly far away.
I love you, Akane-san.
By the way, Akane-san,
Tomorrow, I'll go to see you.
I have endured hard training,
And I want you to see me.
I am much better and stronger now.
I've gone through woods and down a mountain.
I see a giraffe in the forest,
As well as an elephant, a bear, and a camel.
I wonder why I'm seeing so many kinds of beasts.
(Ranma: "Do ya suppose he's in a zoo??")
Oh, I want to see you! Oh, Akane-san!
But I'm like a lost child. And, as if they were laughing at me,
The crow in the sky is cawing
And the cat by the roadside is meowing.
(Shampoo-neko: "Nee! Nyaoo!")
I'm in an endless dream, so far away.
I love you, Akane-san.
Yours truly . . .
P.S. :
Oh, I want to see you! Oh, Akane-san!
But I'm so shy. And, as if they were laughing at me,
The crow in the sky is cawing
And the panda in the backyard growls.
(Genma: "Browr browr . .?")
Love is endlessly far away.
I love you.
I LOVE you.
I LOVE YOOOOOUUUU ! ! ! ! ! ! Akane-san!
